Understanding OCD

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by distressing, intrusive obsessive thoughts and/or repetitive compulsive actions that are clinically significant. Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted, causing marked anxiety and distress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rigid rules.

According to the DSM-5-TR, obsessions and compulsions must be time-consuming (taking more than 1 hour per day) or cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The global lifetime prevalence of OCD is estimated at 2.28–3.21% depending on diagnostic criteria, with the World Mental Health Surveys reporting a combined lifetime prevalence of 4.1% across 10 countries and a 12-month prevalence of 3.0%. Age of onset is typically early, with 25% of cases beginning before age 14 and 64% before age 25.

The good news: OCD is highly treatable. With exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy and/or SSRI medication management, most people experience significant symptom reduction — and a return to the life they deserve.

Perfectionism is a personality trait involving high standards and a desire for things to be done well. OCD is a clinical disorder characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform to reduce distress. While perfectionism can be a feature of OCD (particularly symmetry obsessions), OCD is far more severe — it consumes more than an hour per day, causes significant distress, and interferes with daily functioning. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms meet the threshold for OCD, Dr. Vuchansu can provide a comprehensive evaluation.
Not always, but medication is often helpful. First-line treatment is exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, a specialized form of CBT. SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed medications for OCD, often at higher doses than those used for depression. Some patients benefit from a combination of ERP and medication. Dr. Vuchansu will evaluate your situation and discuss all options with you — no decision is made without your full understanding and consent.
Telehealth appointments are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — all you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera. You’ll meet with Dr. Vuchansu from the privacy and comfort of your own home. Research shows that video teletherapy ERP is highly effective for OCD in both adults and children — a landmark real-world study of 2,173 youth found a median 38.46% decrease in OCD symptoms at 13–17 weeks, with 53.4% meeting full response criteria, and improvements maintained through 43–54 weeks. Teletherapy removes barriers that often prevent people from seeking consistent care.
Results vary by individual, but many patients begin noticing improvement within 2–4 weeks of starting ERP therapy. Medications like SSRIs typically take 8–12 weeks to reach full effect for OCD. Dr. Vuchansu monitors your progress closely and adjusts your plan as needed to ensure you’re moving in the right direction. OCD treatment is a journey, and she will be with you every step of the way.
Yes. Sufficient Grace Mental Healthcare serves patients ages 12–39, including adolescents and teenagers. OCD affects 1–3% of children and adolescents, with approximately 25% of cases beginning before age 14 and 45% before age 18. Dr. Vuchansu is experienced in working with young patients and understands the unique pressures teens face. For patients under 18, parental or guardian consent is required before services begin. Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged throughout the treatment process.
Many insurance plans cover psychiatric telehealth services for OCD. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your mental health benefits. Our team is happy to assist you in understanding your coverage options — reach out to us at (240) 626-0607 or info@sufficientgracehealth.com and we’ll help you navigate the process.
