Understanding Sleep Disorders

What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia disorder is a persistent difficulty with sleep initiation, duration, consolidation, or quality that occurs despite adequate opportunity and circumstances for sleep. It is not simply one bad night — it is a chronic condition that affects how you function during the day, impacting your mood, energy, concentration, and overall quality of life. According to the DSM-5-TR, insomnia is diagnosed when sleep difficulties occur at least 3 nights per week for 3 months or longer and cause clinically significant distress or impairment in daily functioning[reference:6].

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders worldwide. Global estimates indicate that approximately 852 million adults (16.2%) live with insomnia, with 415 million (7.9%) experiencing severe insomnia. It is more prevalent in females across all age groups and is associated with a broad range of adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, depression, and anxiety[reference:7]. Other sleep-wake disorders in this category include hypersomnolence disorder, narcolepsy, breathing-related sleep disorders, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, and parasomnias[reference:8].

The good news: insomnia is highly treatable. With cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) — the gold-standard, first-line treatment — most people experience significant improvement in sleep quality, duration, and daytime functioning.

Occasional poor sleep is normal — everyone has nights where they struggle to fall asleep or wake up feeling unrested, usually due to stress, travel, or a temporary change in routine. Chronic insomnia disorder, however, is diagnosed when sleep difficulties occur at least three nights per week for three months or longer, despite having adequate opportunity for sleep, and cause significant distress or impairment in daytime functioning. If poor sleep has become your new normal and is affecting your mood, energy, or concentration, it’s time to seek help. Dr. Vuchansu can provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine the right diagnosis.
Not always. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia and is preferred over medications. It is a structured, evidence-based program that addresses the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate poor sleep. Medication may be recommended in selected cases, usually as a short-term adjunct or when CBT-I alone is insufficient. Dr. Vuchansu will evaluate your situation and discuss all options with you — no decision is made without your full understanding and consent.
Telehealth appointments are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — all you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera. You’ll meet with Dr. Vuchansu from the privacy and comfort of your own home. Research shows that CBT-I delivered via telehealth is just as effective as in-person care, and it removes barriers that often prevent people from seeking consistent treatment. Many patients find it easier to stay consistent with telehealth appointments.
Results vary by individual, but many patients begin noticing improvement within 2–4 weeks of starting CBT-I. Sleep restriction therapy, a core component of CBT-I, typically improves sleep quality within the first week or two. Dr. Vuchansu monitors your progress closely and adjusts your plan as needed to ensure you’re moving in the right direction. Sleep is a skill that can be rebuilt, and she will be with you every step of the way.
Yes. Sufficient Grace Mental Healthcare serves patients ages 12–39, including adolescents and teenagers. Dr. Vuchansu is experienced in working with young patients and understands the unique sleep challenges teens face — academic stress, screen time, and irregular schedules. For patients under 18, parental or guardian consent is required before services begin. Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged throughout the treatment process.
Many insurance plans cover psychiatric telehealth services for insomnia and sleep disorders. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your mental health benefits. Our team is happy to assist you in understanding your coverage options — reach out to us at (240) 626-0607 or info@sufficientgracehealth.com and we’ll help you navigate the process.
