Understanding the Condition

What Is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe psychiatric disorder characterized by psychosis — a loss of contact with reality — along with cognitive deficits and negative symptoms. People with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations (false perceptions), delusions (false beliefs), disorganized speech and behavior, and a diminished range of emotional expression. It is not a “split personality” — it is a brain disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and perceives the world.

Other psychotic disorders in this spectrum include delusional disorder (persistent false beliefs without other psychotic symptoms), brief psychotic disorder (psychotic symptoms lasting less than one month), schizophreniform disorder (symptoms lasting one to six months), and schizoaffective disorder (overlapping psychosis and mood episodes). Worldwide, schizophrenia affects approximately 1 in 300 people (0.29%), rising to 1 in 206 among adults aged 20 and over. Onset typically occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood, with men often experiencing symptoms earlier than women. With the right treatment, many people with schizophrenia can manage their symptoms and lead meaningful, productive lives.

The good news: schizophrenia and psychotic disorders are treatable. With antipsychotic medication, regular monitoring, and psychosocial support, most people experience significant symptom reduction — and a return to the life they deserve.

Schizophrenia is the most common and chronic psychotic disorder, requiring at least six months of continuous symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, or negative symptoms. Other psychotic disorders differ primarily in duration and symptom pattern: brief psychotic disorder lasts less than one month, schizophreniform disorder lasts one to six months, delusional disorder involves persistent delusions without other psychotic symptoms, and schizoaffective disorder features overlapping psychosis and mood episodes. Dr. Vuchansu can provide a thorough evaluation to determine the correct diagnosis.
Yes — antipsychotic medication is the foundation of schizophrenia treatment. Second-generation antipsychotics are typically first-line, with careful monitoring for metabolic side effects. For treatment-resistant cases, clozapine may be recommended. Dr. Vuchansu will evaluate your situation and create a personalized medication plan tailored to your symptoms and history. Regular monitoring and follow-up are essential for safety and effectiveness.
Telehealth appointments are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — all you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera. You’ll meet with Dr. Vuchansu from the privacy and comfort of your own home. Research shows that videoconference-based therapy can be safely administered to patients with schizophrenia and is effective for psychiatric symptoms, general anxiety, and quality of life. It removes barriers that often prevent people from seeking consistent care.
Results vary by individual. Positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) often respond to antipsychotic medication within days to weeks, while negative symptoms and cognitive difficulties may take longer to improve. Dr. Vuchansu monitors your progress closely and adjusts your plan as needed to ensure you’re moving in the right direction. Schizophrenia treatment is a journey, and she will be with you every step of the way.
